Joyce Gibbs

Joyce Hess Gibbs, 84, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Friday, April 29, 2011. She was the widow of James E. Gibbs Sr., and the daughter, of the late Bert and Mary Scales Hess. Mrs. Gibbs retired from the Colonial Heights School System with over 29 years of service. She was a dedicated and long time member of the Highland United Methodist Church and Sunday School Secretary for 45 years. She is survived by her daughters, Sandra G. Simpson and husband, Tom of Ky., Linda G. Essig and husband, Fred of Chesterfield, Cynthia G. Barfield and husband, Robert of Chesterfield; son Jay Gibbs and friend, Liz Hancock of Colonial Heights; step son, Larry Gibbs and wife, Henrietta "Peanut" of Md.; their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; grandchildren, Troy Schrum and wife Tricia, Beth Schrum, Jeremy Essig, Damon Essig; great grandchildren Jessica Schrum, Dawn Schrum, Deven Neace, Reid Neace, Brooke Neace, and Jacob Essig; a sister Mary Moore and husband, Fred, with many nieces, nephews and a wonderful gathering of loving friends. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 in Highland United Methodist Church, 125 E. Westover Ave Colonial Heights, Va 23834 with the Reverend William Rawlings officiating. Interment, Blandford Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30- 8:30:p.m. Monday evening at the Colonial Heights chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Morning Star Sunday School Class, at Highland United Methodist Church, so that they may continue their community outreach program.
