Dr. Leo M. Gutierrez, 66, Prince George, Va., passed away Monday, November 17, 2008 at Southside Regional Medical Center. Dr. Gutierrez, an ER physician & surgeon for 40 years, studied medicine at the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines, class of 1968, continuing post-graduate studies at the French Polyclinic in New York and Temple University in Philadelphia. Active member of the Fil-Am Assoc. of the Tri-Cities, NCVAPP, APPA and a Sacred Heart Parishioner. He was born in Calapan City, Mindoro Philippines Sept 18, 1942 and was the son of the late Dr. Leoncio Gutierrez and Jovencia Gutierrez. Leo met his wife, Evelyn in New York City living in Queens until 1986 moving to Virginia. Recently celebrating their 35th Wedding anniversary. An accomplished man who could appreciate a Broadway score to entertaining his guest's answering Jeopardy questions. A cordial and friendly person who had a knack for always being able to relate to others or offer a fresh perspective. Leo leaves a long list of friends and family who enjoyed his gregarious nature. He loved welcoming others by having social gatherings or attending them. Possibly his greatest success was his ability to affect people's lives by reaching out to them on a personal level. He appreciated humility, as he was never flashy, inspiring admiration by being unselfishly willing to share with others. Leo enjoyed good conversation, a good book, movies, humor, his NY Giants and cooking for friends or family. Public speaking and writing were some of his favorite activities. A loving father and patriarch, these are just a very few ways he was able to inspire, through honesty and by making life worthwhile. Survived by wife, Evelyn Gutierrez; sons, Mark, Luke, Eric; daughter, Maria and cat, Pusah; Sister, Tita Gutierrez Dilay; Brother, Vic Gutierrez. The family will receive friends and relatives 7 to 8:30p.m. Friday, November 21st at the Church of the Sacred Heart, 9300 Community Lane, Petersburg,Va. 23805. A funeral mass will be held at the Church of the Sacred Heart on Saturday, November 22nd at 10:00a.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
