LTC Gregory Robinson McSwain, USA (Ret.), 76, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2018. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas R. McSwain; mother, Mary Crawford; step-father, Kenneth Crawford; and his brother, Thomas McSwain Jr. With an extensive military career, Greg served two tours in the Vietnam conflict where he was an artillery company commander and a pilot for an attack helicopter attachment. He received many awards during his thirty years of service to our country including the purple heart. After he retired from the Army he went on to work for SunTrust Bank as the vice president of the IT department. Greg enjoyed many hobbies outside of work, like being a movie buff and an avid sports fan, and being a loving father and husband. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Loretta McSwain; daughter, Laura McSwain; son, Gregory McSwain II (Donna); four grandchildren, Gregory Applebach, Lindsay Applebach, Jeremy Jessup, and Kyle Marlowe; five siblings, Gary McSwain (Lillian), Gayla Ponce (Raul), Linda McSwain (Bill Leone), Lynette Sharlach (Alan), and Corinne Macrae; step-mother, Holly Hunt; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2018 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834 with the Reverend David Prather officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home. An inurnment will be scheduled at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
