Lyndon Lucille Rooney, 89, went home to worship with the Lord, walk the streets of gold, and claim her heavenly mansion on April 29, 2009. Born in Petersburg on August 17, 1919 Lucille was the daughter of the late James A. Atkinson Jr. and Linda Mayes Atkinson. She was preceded to Heaven by her step-mother, Laura Bryant Atkinson, her husband of 33 years, John A. Rooney Sr., her daughter, Lucille Wardwell, a son, James Rooney, her brother, Wallace Atkinson, and sisters, Pauline Skitzki, Rosamond Benn, and Edna Norris. She was a graduate of Petersburg High School and a member of Monumental Baptist Church during her youth. A strong, Bible-believing Christian woman, Lucille Rooney had been the pillar of her family for the last four decades. She was accepting to all who came to her door and was a compassionate animal lover and protector. She is survived by her son, John A. Rooney Jr. and friend, Dene Sharbono of Colonial Heights; her son, Jackie L. Rooney and his wife, Kathy of Petersburg; daughter-in-law, Felicia Rooney of Suffolk; granddaughters, Beth Fox of Ohio, and Kimberly Thornburg of Indiana; grandsons, John Rooney and his wife, Janette of Petersburg, Michael Rooney and his wife, Carisia of Florida, Jeremy Rooney of Richmond, Michael Wardwell of Indiana, and James Hubbard of Petersburg; five great-grandchildren; her sister, Alice Browning of Carson (a long time resident of Petersburg); numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 4, 2009 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard with the Reverend Dr. Ivan Perkinson officiating. Interment Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg.
