Marie Pesko Michalek, the family matriarch we know and love as "Mammy", died peacefully on February 9, 2017 at Southside Regional Medical Center surrounded by her family. Born on September 30, 1917 in Richmond, Virginia and raised in Hopewell, she was the daughter of the late Maxim and Anna Pesko. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony J. Michalek, Sr.; her son, James Michael Michalek (Jimmy); and her four brothers. Marie is survived by her six children, Anthony J. Michalek, Jr. (Mary), Thomas Edward Michalek, Anne Marie Michalek, Susan M. Boyle (Kevin), Ruth Michalek-Zimmer (Cliff), and Dorothy Elizabeth Michalek; eight grandchildren, Anthony J. Michalek III, Heather P. Savasta, Bridget P. Vaccaro (Mike), Nicholas Poe, Lisa Jameson, Paul Edward Michalek, Kevin Boyle, and Kennedy Boyle (Ashley); step grandchildren, Bill Zimmer (Tina), and Kevin Zimmer (Shayna); six great-grandchildren, Isabella and Mariah Jameson, Keely and Nolen Savasta, Myles and Berklee Vaccaro; step great-grandchildren, William Zimmer and James Hawthorne; sisters-in-law, Mary Pesko and Betty Michalek, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She also had numerous relatives in Belarus and Ukraine, including special cousins, Tamara Rulko, Tasya Estrina, and Inessa Barysevich in Minsk. Marie retired as a keypunch operator from DCSC (Bellwood) and was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, the Catholic Golden Age and NARFE, Midlothian Chapter. Her love for organic gardening, nature, animals, especially cats, continued throughout her 99 years. Her devotion to her children and grandchildren was guided by her special devotion to the Blessed Mother. A Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, February 13, 2017 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 17111 Jefferson Davis Highway South Chesterfield, Virginia 23834, with a family visitation following until 8:00 p.m. after which a Wake will be held. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at the church, with Father Danny Cogut as Celebrant, with a visitation taking place an hour prior to the service. Committal services will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, Virginia 23831. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Marie's memory to St. Ann Food Pantry, 17111 Jefferson Davis Highway South Chesterfield, Virginia 23834, Greater Richmond ARC 3600 Saunders Avenue, Richmond, Virginia 23227, or to the charity of your choice.
