Martha Z. Hawkins, 85, of Petersburg, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2012. She was born September 6, 1926, to Sicilian immigrants, the late Domenico and Grace D'Amico Zappulla, the widow of Herbert Hawkins Jr., and was preceded in death by her siblings, Lena Skelton, Rosina Zappulla, Josephine Moxley, Vincent E. (Pete) Zappulla, Frank Zappulla, Sebastian (Buster) Zappulla, and a cousin, Sebastian (Sebby) Zappulla. Mrs. Hawkins was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by her daughters, Deborah H. Schmidt and husband, Keith of Dinwiddie, Rose H. (Sissy) Jacobs and husband, Dale of Dinwiddie, and Shelly H. Vairo and husband, John of Matoaca; six grandchildren, Eric Schmidt and wife, Heather, Matthew Jacobs, Aaron Jacobs, Heather Gibbs and husband, Thomas, Kendal Vairo, and Mackenzie Vairo; devoted friends, Donald and Francine Schmidt. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 6, 2012 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard with Sister Ann Daniel Belmonte officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Virginia, 1700 Bayberry Court, Richmond, Virginia 23226.
