Marvin L. Starnes, 77, of Chesterfield, passed away on Thursday, April 26, 2018. Born February 13, 1941, in Petersburg, Virginia, he was the son of the late Edward R. and Virginia Crank Starnes. Mr. Starnes was a veteran of the United States Navy and a retired Lieutenant with the Chesterfield County Police Department, with 33 years of faithful service. During his years on the force, he was an original SWAT team member, and a School Resource Officer for Thomas Dale High School. Outside of work, he was a driving instructor, a football official for the CVFOA, and a karate instructor, with a 6th degree Black Belt. He is survived by his wife, Diane V. Starnes; children, Christian A. Starnes (Chérie), Kelly D. Royster (B. Scott), Heather L. Van Gieson (Victor), Joel E. Starnes (Angela), Aaron M. Starnes (Alisha), and Maria E. Turley (Spencer); 22 grandchildren; and a brother, Ronnie Starnes (Brenda) of Colonial Heights. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Belmont Ward, 3541 Cogbill Road, Richmond, Virginia 23234. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 30, 2018 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
