Mary Brantley

Mary Nelson Brantley, 91, of Colonial Heights, departed this life March 20, 2023. She was the daughter of the late Edwin R. and Thelma Hunt Nelson; and was also preceded in death by her husband, William P. Brantley with whom she shared 51 wonderful years; and her sister, Marian N. Veazey.

Mary, also known as Jo, was a graduate of Wake Forest College. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Her best role, for many years was that of a dedicated mother and wife.  She loved to sew, knit, crochet and take care of her family. She treasured many beloved cats.  As an empty nester, she entered the work force as an administrative assistant at the Cooperative Extension office at Virginia State College.  After retirement she enjoyed going to  the Outer Banks with her late husband, playing bridge and spending time with her family.

She will be deeply missed by her children, David W. Brantley of Colonial Heights, Ellen and Tom Giles of Mechanicsville, Carol and David Grant of Garysburg, N.C.; grandchildren, Adam (Lindsay) Giles and Emily Giles, Mechanicsville, Lara Grant, Raleigh, NC, Mark Grant, Garysburg, NC and Robin Moore (Elison) Garysburg, NC; Niece, Janet Sandford (Eddie), Chester; nephew, Ben Brantley, Ancram, NY. She was “GG” to four great-grandchildren, Eliza, Max, Anna and Alex.  The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the nurses and staff at Dunlop House who cared for Mary for eleven months.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 3, 2023 in Bermuda Memorial Park with Reverend Bob Clyde officiating.  In lieu of flowers please donate to your favorite charity. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
