Mary Elizabeth Coghill, 91, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late William R. and Annie Skinner Barnes, and the widow of Claude Bayton Coghill. She was preceded in death by a brother, Richard (Dick) Barnes. She was a long time member of Walnut Hill Baptist Church, where she loved to work in the church library, and a member of the Federated Woman's Club of Petersburg. She had a wonderful and full life as she loved to travel, read, cross stitch, and solve crossword puzzles. She was supportive, kind and always wanted her family to feel special. She loved flowers, gardening, and cooking. Betty, as she known, was the best mother in the world to her two children, John Coghill of Colonial Heights, and Claudia Jones of Greensboro, North Carolina, and was a wonderful mother-in-law, to Jay Jones of Greensboro, North Carolina. She was a special grandmother, known as Nana & NeeNee to Joshua and Cameron Jones of Greensboro, North Carolina, Anne McNabb of Sterling, Caroline Coghill of Fairfax, and Sasha Cook Coghill of Savannah, Georgia; one great-grandchild, Colin McNabb of Sterling. She will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her. A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 13, 2009 in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George with Michael Moore officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday June 12, 2009at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
