Mary Godwin

Mary "Virginia" Godwin, 84, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Monday, February 13, 2012. Born in Georgia, on November 30, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Mallie C. and Aileen Templeton Aldred. She was preceded in death by her dearly loved husband of 50 years, James C. Godwin on September 6, 1999; and a son-in-law, Dennis Neely on April 25, 2002. Virginia travelled extensively with her Army husband and family and lived in Georgia, South Carolina, Germany, and Iran before settling in Colonial Heights in 1967. Mrs. Godwin was a member of the Colonial Heights Baptist Church, a longtime, dedicated volunteer for the SPCA of Petersburg and Colonial Heights, where she held the office of both Secretary and Historian, and volunteered at the Colonial Heights Animal Shelter. She is survived by three daughters, Doris Godwin of Atlanta, Georgia, Linda Neely of Chester, and Janice Zeigler and husband, Barry of Mechanicsville; three grandsons, Derek Neely, Colin Neely, and Kevin Zeigler; two brothers, Mallie Aldred and wife, Jeanne & Thomas Ray Aldred and wife, Faith all of Atlanta, Georgia, and her beloved grand-cats and grand-dogs. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 25, 2012 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard with the Reverend Dr. Randall Hahn officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Inurnment of cremains will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the SPCA of Petersburg and Colonial Heights, 201 Temple Avenue, Suite E, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834.
