Mrs. Mary Frances Topham Hanks, 93, died Friday, December 1, 2017 at St. Francis Medical Center in Midlothian, VA. A devoted Christian, Mrs. Hanks has been joyfully reunited in heaven with loved ones who preceded her in death, including her parents, Henry S. and Dorothy C. Topham, her husband, the Rev. Paul LaVern Hanks, and her two brothers, the Rev. Marion L. Topham and the Rev. Harry S. Topham. Mrs. Hanks is survived by her four sons and daughters-in-law: Bobby and Linda Hanks of Chesterfield County, VA, Greg and Myra Hanks of McAdenville, NC, John and Becky Hanks of Prince George, VA, and Mark and Susan Hanks of Midlothian, VA. Mrs. Hanks was affectionately known as Granny, Ma, or Gigi by her eight grandchildren and their families: Matthew Hanks, his wife Susan and their children Gabriel, Anna, and Jonah; Megan Hinkle, her husband Blair and their children Landon and Elizabeth; Sarah Hanks and Johan Foster; Samuel Hanks, his wife Melody and their children Jeremiah and Katherine; Joseph Hanks and his wife Abby; Jared Hanks, Brianna Johnson and their daughter Brynnlee; Jaqueline Myers and her husband Nathaniel; and Jonathan Wyckoff. Mrs. Hanks will be remembered by a large extended family and many friends. Mrs. Hanks was born in Covington, VA on September 8, 1924. She and her husband Paul were married on December 27, 1947, at the First Presbyterian Church of Covington. As a minister's wife for over 40 years, Mrs. Hanks served alongside her husband as he pastored churches in Chesterfield County, VA, Jefferson, SC, and Rowland, NC. Rev. and Mrs. Hanks later managed Camp Monroe, a Presbyterian church camp in the Sandhills of North Carolina. Mrs. Hanks was a devout member of Open Door Baptist Church in Midlothian for over eight years and of Immanuel Baptist Church in Colonial Heights for the proceeding 18 years, where she was known for serving in the church kitchen. A celebration of Mrs. Hanks' life will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church, 620 Lafayette Avenue, Colonial Heights, VA, on Saturday, December 9, 2017. The family will receive friends at 4:00 pm in the church atrium, followed by a celebration of her life at 5:00 pm. Pastor Fred Gray will officiate the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hands of Love for Bolivia (www.handsoflovebolivia.com). The Hanks Family wishes to convey their sincere gratitude to the staff of St. Francis Medical Center in Midlothian for the attentive and compassionate care bestowed upon Mrs. Hanks during her final days.
