Mary Johnston

Mary Evelyn Richards Johnston passed from this life on January 16, 2014, surrounded by her children. She was preceded in death by Robert E. "Bob" Johnston, her husband of 58 years. The daughter of Auby "Jack" and Mildred Pope Richards and sister of Lamar "Jackie" Richards, Mary was born and raised in Miami, Florida, where she met Bob when both were students at Miami Edison Senior High. They married in 1950 and raised three daughters, Barbara Jean Johnston, Carol Elaine Johnston Jasper, and Patricia Ann Johnston Bernas. Mary received a degree in Secretarial Science and served as Administrative Assistant to the chairman of the Department of Pathology at the Medical College of Virginia for eighteen years before retiring to spend time with Bob, her family, and her beautiful garden. Mary is survived by her daughters, her sons-in-law William A. Jasper and Mark E. Bernas, her granddaughter Lauren Christiana Jasper, and her grandsons Taylor Johnston Bernas and Michael Austin Jasper. The family will receive guests from 3:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory 2033 Boulevard. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday January 20, 2014 at Chester United Methodist Church, 12132 Percival Street, Chester, Virginia 23831. Interment will be Private. Flowers are welcome or a memorial contribution can be made in Mary's name to Lewis Ginter Botanical Park, 1800 Lakeside Avenue, Henrico, Virginia, The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, 200 N.
