Mattie Campbell

March 4, 1921 — May 11, 2017

Mattie Esther Russell Fitts Campbell of Church Road, Virginia, went home to be with Jesus, her Lord, on May 11, 2017. She was born in Campbell County and lived in Petersburg for most of her life. Esther is preceded in death by her husbands, Arthur "Pete" Fitts, married 53 years, and Alister Russell Campbell, married nine years. She is survived by her large and wonderful Russell and Fitts families, a daughter, Theresa Milstead; a son, Michael Fitts (Jane); six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. During WWII, Esther was employed as a clerk typist at Richmond Quarter Master Depot and later in Newport News Port of Embarkation. Upon moving to Virginia Beach, she worked in the Department of Juvenile and Domestic Court and also as a Secretary Receptionist for six years in the Alcohol Safety Action Program. She loved caring for and helping others, so she worked in the Caregivers Program, from which she received so many blessings. Esther was also active in her loving Calvary Baptist Church, in Colonial Heights, for many years. Heartfelt gratitude is extended to Esther's nephew, Luther Russell and his wife, Tammy, for providing her a home in her final months where she was loved and cared for, We are humbled and forever grateful to Tammy for her tireless efforts, dedication, and compassion to her Auntie. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday May 16, 2017, at the Crater Road Chapel of E.
