Melvin E. "Pat" Floyd, 81, departed this life on Monday, August 4, 2014. After graduating John Marshall High School in 1951, Mr. Floyd entered the United States Navy during the Korean War. He served in the Naval Ceremonial Guard in Washington, D.C. before transferring to the USS John McCain, DL3, with duty in the North Atlantic Ocean. Mr. Floyd obtained his formal education in engineering and surveying at the University of Richmond and Old Dominion University. In 1963, Mr. Floyd founded Virginia Surveys; an engineering and surveying firm based in Chesterfield County, Virginia. He was a past member of the Virginia Association of Land Surveyors, the American Legion, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the Rosicrucian Order, A.M.O.R.C. Mr. Floyd served as a member of the adjunct faculty at John Tyler Community College where he taught surveying and engineering related subjects. After his teaching career, he served on the Engineering Advisory Committee for JTCC. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Anne Elizabeth Peterson Floyd; two sons, Kevin L. Floyd and Jeffrey K. Floyd; three daughters-in-law, Sandy, Patti, and Sherrie Floyd; six grandchildren, Kristie Perkinson and husband, Rodger II, Krag Floyd, Erin Floyd, Bryan Floyd, and wife Elizabeth, Morgan Winfield and husband, Harris, and Kyle Floyd; two great-grandchildren, Tré and Lance Perkinson. A Graveside Service, with military honors, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 11, 2014 at Hollywood Cemetery, 412 S. Cherry Street, Richmond, Virginia 23220 with the Reverend Dan Lipford officiating. Arrangements by the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
