Melvin Suyes

Melvin Bryan Suyes, 80, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, October 6, 2016. Born on October 1, 1936, he was the son of the late Birdie Blick and Jennings Bryan Suyes, and was also preceded in death by his brother, Carlton Lee Suyes. Melvin retired from Allied Signal after 37 years of service. For several years before he retired from Allied, he worked as a security officer for Immanuel Baptist Church, a position he held until his passing, and upon full retirement from the plant, he added to his role the position of church custodian, which he did for 15 years. He was an active member in his church and through the years he served as a pre-school Sunday School teacher, money counter and Deacon, and was presently serving as Sunday School Secretary and adult choir member. He loved his church and church family. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Gayle Petty Suyes; son, Brian Randolph Suyes and wife, Melissa; grandchildren, London and Nolan, whom he cherished dearly; nephew, Jerry Suyes and wife, Becki. The family will receive friends from 2-3:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. A committal service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 10, 2016 in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg. A Memorial Service will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church at 7:00 p.m. Monday night, October 10, 2016, with the Reverends Jerry Parker, Fred Adkins and Robert Livesay officiating. Flowers are appreciated, but contributions may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church building fund, 620 Lafayette Avenue, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834.
