Mildred Wells Gordon, 84, formerly of Colonial Heights and Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina passed away on Friday, January 30, 2015. She had resided the past three and a half years at Brighter Living Assisted Living in Hopewell, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Samuel Flournoy Wells and Etta Mae Collins Wells of Dinwiddie County. Her husband of 52 years, Jesse Thornton Gordon, Jr. preceded her in death, as well as her brothers, Charles Henry Wells, Benjamin Ray Wells, Richard Collins Wells, Samuel Ernest Wells, Ernest Jennings Wells, and Frank Odell Wells; sisters, Susie Mae Wells Lee, Sarah Elizabeth "Sally" Rutledge, Annie Wells Nobles, and Myrtle Margaret Wells Maitland. She was employed by C&P Telephone Company for 20 years and retired from the Colonial Heights Public School System. She is survived by a daughter, Wanda Gordon Davis and her husband, Jimmy; a step-son, Jerry Herke and his wife, Joan; grandsons, Jay Davis and his wife, Erin, Mark Herke, Daniel Herke, and Brian Herke and his wife, Shelley; three great-grandsons; three great-granddaughters; a brother, Paul A Wells; a sister-in-law, Demsie A. Wells; many nieces and nephews; and other extended family and friends. The family would like to thank Misty Culler and the staff of Brighter Living for their care and compassion. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 8, 2015 at Oakland Baptist Church, 12601 Prince George Drive, Disputanta, Virginia 23842 with a Memorial Service to follow at 3:00 p.m. led by Pastor Robert Livesay III. Burial will be held at a later date in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Youth Fund at Oakland Baptist Church.
