Mildred Belle (Milly) Horner was a graduate of Dinwiddie High School and Longwood University. She was a retired teacher of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond. In her more than 30 years of teaching in Petersburg’s Catholic schools, Milly taught art, life science and religion. She believed in empowering her students to create art and to value God’s creation. She was an accomplished artist, well-known in the Petersburg area art community. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Petersburg, and in recent years she volunteered at Crater Community Hospice Thrift Shop. Milly died at home in Sutherland, Dinwiddie County, June 25, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Irving Horner and Evaline Youngblood Horner, and by her brother James Kenneth Horner. Milly is survived by many cousins, including several in Virginia: John S. Horner, Richmond; Deborah Castleton Parker, Henry; and Virginia Carlton Finley, Collinsville. A Memorial Mass will be held at 12 noon Monday, July 19, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 151 West Washington Street, Petersburg, Virginia 23803, with Father Gino Rossi and Father Joseph Goldsmith officiating. Interment of cremains will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Petersburg, Virginia. The family will greet Milly’s friends, colleagues, and former students prior to the service, beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the Commons area of the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Petersburg Area Art League or to St. Joseph Catholic Church. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E.
