Newell Nelson Langford, 96, of South Chesterfield, VA, died Tuesday, December 6, 2017 after suffering a stroke. Newell was preceded in death by his parents, James and Clemmie Langford; wife, Patricia J. Langford; and four siblings, Bill Langford, James Langford, D. Ray Langford, and Mary Jennings. He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Linda and Jack Mathis, Carol and Scott Wiggins, and Nancy and Eddie Alexander; granddaughter, Ashley Wendt and husband, Aaron; and great-grandson, Antaires Nelson Wendt, sister in-law, Ernestine Langford, girlfriend, Peggy Lee. Newell was born August 3, 1921 in Bonita, TX. At the age of 22, Newell was commissioned into the US Navy, which was spurred by the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He became a pilot and navigator in WWII and also served as the navigator on the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga. He served in the Korean War and Vietnam Conflict, ending his service at the Pentagon. In May of 1946, he married Patricia Burk in Summit, OH, and they celebrated 45 years together. During his 25 years with the US Navy, he earned numerous medals for his service, as well as, his BS from University of Maryland and his MS from American University. Newell was honorably discharged as a Commander and began his career in civil service for the US Army Logistics Command serving at Fort Belvoir, VA, Fort Eustis, VA and Fort Lee, VA, where he retired. Newell served his church, St. Ann's, as an administrator for over eight years and became a prominent member of the Knights of Columbus. Newell was a giving, kind and wonderful person, and everyone in the community truly loved him, and his many stories! Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends, loved dancing, and loved flowers and all the holidays, especially Christmas. Newell was looking forward to the newest addition to the family, a great-granddaughter to be born in February 2018. A visitation will be held at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Colonial Heights on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with Catholic Mass services beginning at 6:30 p.m. A reception will follow the services at the church in Condon Hall. Burial will be in Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle, VA at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 13, 2017. Father Danny Cogut will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Ann's Catholic Church Food Pantry, 17111 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. Arrangements are by the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E.
