Norman Lee Spell, 88, of Colonial Heights, VA passed away on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at Chippenham Medical Center. Born in Sampson Co., North Carolina, he was the son of the late John Everett and Minnie Strickland Spell; and was also preceded in death by his step-mother, Annie Spell; his grandmother Spell; and his aunt, Addie Merritt. Mr. Spell was a United States Army Veteran and had retired from Honeywell as a millwright after 25 plus years of service. He was a member of Highland United Methodist Church and also the American Legion Post #284. He enjoyed going to the mountains, especially in the fall, and taking pictures of the leaves changing colors. Mr. Spell is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Carolyn J. Spell; two sons, J. Mark Spell and wife, Bernadette and J. Allen Spell and wife, Sherri; one brother, J.C. Spell and wife, Joyce; devoted friends, Edward and Shirley Branch and their family; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November, 6, 2015 at the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. A private interment will be held in Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Flowers are welcome, or contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
