Paul Lawrence Hardy, 78, of Disputanta passed away on Monday, October 2, 2023 at his home. Born December 5, 1944, he was the son of the late Monroe Simpson Hardy and Delores Royston, and was also preceded in death by his brothers, Lorenzo Hardy, Carl Hardy, and Monroe Hardy. He was a longtime member of Cornerstone Ministries and Rock Church in Petersburg.
Paul proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He retired as a Sargeant Major from the Army after 27 years of dedicated and honorable service to his beloved country.
After his distinguished military service, Paul continued his impactful career with 20 years of dedicated service at the Virginia State Unemployment Commission. There, he served as a print shop and mailroom supervisor, leaving an lasting mark on his colleagues with his work ethic and commitment to excellence.
A proud member of the American Legion Post 146 in Hopewell, Paul found camaraderie and continued his dedication to service even after retiring from the military.
Beyond his professional life, Paul was a master woodworker whose skillful hands crafted custom clocks and furniture that adorned his home. His passion for woodworking reflected his meticulous attention to detail and creativity, leaving behind cherished pieces that will be treasured by generations to come.
Paul's green thumb was evident in his award-winning garden, which earned him the prestigious title of "Best Yard” of Fort Campbell in 1988.
He leaves behind a legacy of selfless service, dedication to family, and a passion for craftsmanship and gardening that enriched the lives of all who knew him. Paul Lawrence Hardy will be remembered not only for his remarkable career but also for the kindness, wisdom, and warmth he shared with everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 39 years, Hyon Hardy; son, Paul Hardy and wife, Anna; grandchildren, Kamarhia, Makana, and Justine Hardy; sister, Elaine Moore and husband, Thomas, Faye Davis; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at the Crater Road Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, Virginia 23805. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will take place following the funeral on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in the Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia, 10300 Pridesville Road, Amelia Court House, Virginia 23002.
