Raeford W. Walker of Colonial Heights, VA, passed away on November 30, 2017. He was born in Leaksville, NC, (now known as Eden, NC) on June 16, 1933, along with his identical twin, Raenord, to D. Curtis and Blanche L. Walker. Raeford was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Elwood Walker, J.W. Talley, and Dewey Talley, and his sisters Helen Hancock, Lucille Simpson, Pat Thompson, and Lavonne Hall. He is survived by his wife, Kay; his children, Catherine Walker and Bill Walker; his brothers, Raenord Walker (Emily) and Leon Walker (Gail); a special nephew, Lawrence Talley; and many other very dear nieces and nephews. Raeford had a lifetime love of basketball. ln his senior year of high school, he earned a place on the North Carolina All-State basketball team. While serving his country as a member of the Army during the Korean conflict, he was selected to play on a military basketball team in Germany. After earning a Master of Arts degree in Education, Raeford coached high school basketball and taught Government at Colonial Heights High School for 12 years. Following his high school teaching and coaching career, Raeford worked in civil service at Fort Lee for the remainder of his professional life. Raeford was a longtime member of Highland United Methodist Church. He served his community on various boards and committees such as the city's electoral board. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 4, 2017 at Highland United Methodist Church 125 E. Westover Avenue Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834 with the Reverend Joseph Carson officiating. Interment will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park Prince George, Virginia. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Monday, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. ln lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Highland United Methodist Church 125 E.
