Gary Morris Akin, 61, passed away on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Chase City Health and Rehab Center. He was born on June 28, 1953 in Petersburg Virginia to Stanley and Arlene Akin. Gary grew up in Colonial Heights and Chester. He graduated from Thomas Dale High School in Chester in 1971. After high school he attended John Tyler Community College for one year, Chowan College for two years, he then transferred to Campbell University where he received an Associate's degree in religion. In later years, Gary went back to school and graduated from the Baptist Theological Seminary of Richmond with a Master's degree in Theology. After he was ordained, he became a Pastor for ten years at Dinwiddie Baptist Church. Gary married Linda Rountree in 1974 in Corapeake, North Carolina. They were happily married for forty years. Gary was a member of Dinwiddie Baptist Church and was very involved with the youth in Dinwiddie. He enjoyed anything involving water, such as kayaking, sail boarding, driving his boats, swimming, and snorkeling. Gary was an avid Redskins fan and enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing music, woodworking, riding his bike and motorcycle, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Gary is survived by his wife, Linda; his daughter, Jennifer Shaylor and husband, Chris, and their children, Lee and Jackson. He is also survived by his son, Jason Akin and wife, Marissa; his parents, Stanley and Arlene Akin; his brother, Mark Akin and wife, Amy, and their son, Ian; his sister, Lori Clapp; and his loving cousins and other relatives. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Dinwiddie Baptist Church, 14818 Wilkinson Road, Dewitt, Virginia with the Reverend Rodney Jenkins and the Reverend Malcolm Hutton officiating. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 19, 2015 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
