Rev. Marvin Wayne Clipp, 78, died on May 16, 2015. He was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia, the son of Basil R. and Ruth Clipp. He was predeceased by his sister, Betty Christensen. Rev. Clipp is survived by his wife of 57 years, Cornelia Goerner Clipp; a daughter, Connie Clipp Burley and husband, Dr. J. Bruce Burley, of Boonsboro, Maryland; a son, Dr. Randy Cornell Clipp and wife, Linda, of Richmond, Virginia; grandchildren, Dr. J. Brandon Burley and wife, Ashley; Allison Burley Kappler and husband, Andrew; David Clipp, and Grace Clipp; and great-grandchild, Carter Lee Kappler. He earned a B.A. from Carson-Newman College in 1958 and a Master's of Religious Education from Southern Seminary in 1963. He did postgraduate work at the College of William and Mary and the University of Virginia. Rev. Clipp was bi-vocational. He began a career in public school education in Rutledge, Tennessee, and then moved to Colonial Heights where he taught English and was Head of the English Department at Colonial Heights High School. In 1968 Rev. Clipp became principal of North Elementary, a position he held for twenty years. He was appointed principal of Lakeview Elementary in 1988 and remained there until his retirement ten years later. During this time, he was also a minister serving a number of churches in the Richmond, Petersburg, and South Hill areas. He is a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He began his ministry as interim pastor of his home church during the summer of 1957. He served Mascot Baptist Church in Tennessee while at Carson-Newman and East Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky, while in seminary. He was Minister of Youth at First Baptist Church, Bluefield, West Virginia, Branch's Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia, Colonial Heights Baptist Church, and Winfree Memorial Baptist Church in Midlothian, Virginia. He was Minister of Church Growth at Colonial Heights Baptist Church, Interim Pastor of Olive Branch Baptist Church in Blackridge, Virginia, and served as Pastor of Ephesus Baptist Church in South Hill, Virginia, for eleven years. Rev. Clipp was on the Tri-Cities YMCA Board of Directors and was President of the Colonial Heights Youth Services Commission, the Colonial Heights Education Association, and was a lifetime honorary member of the Virginia Parent Teachers Association. He was President of the Elementary School Principals of District "D", member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals, and served on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Rev. Clipp was nominated for the national Distinguished Principal Award in 1988 by the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals. After his retirement, he was a teacher recruiter for Colonial Heights City Schools. An avid sports fan, Marvin was a marathon runner. During his career, coached JV football, JV basketball, and wrestling at Colonial Heights High School. He was a Virginia High School basketball official and vice-president of the Tri-Cities Basketball Officials Association. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2015, at Immanuel Baptist Church with the Reverend Fred Adkins, Dr. Randy Clipp, and Rev. Cecil Chambers officiating. Entombment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George, Virginia. The family will receive friends Friday, May 22, 2015, from 3 - 5 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Marvin W. Clipp Scholarship Fund, Lakeview Elementary School, 401 Taswell Avenue, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834.
