Richard Marcellus Halbert, 81, of Colonial Heights, departed this life on Saturday, May 29, 2010. He was the son of the late Victor M. and Mary Steele Halbert, and was preceded in death by a sister, Ida Halbert Burt. Richard graduated from Petersburg High School, attended Randolph Macon College, was in the Marine Reserve, a member of the Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, the Colonial Heights Optimist Club, the Petersburg Elks #237, the Colonial Heights American Legion Post #284, and the TPA. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Nancy Howerton Halbert; a daughter, Vicki Halbert Brooks of Midlothian; a son, Richard M. Halbert Jr. and wife, Carol of Chester; four grandchildren, Stephanie H. Lyon and husband, Chris, Lindsey H. Thompson and husband, John, Philip R. Brooks III, and C. Austin Brooks; a great-granddaughter, Holly Mae Lyon; two sisters, Louise H. Pugh of Petersburg and Jean H. Thomas of Drewryville, Virginia; a brother, Edward M. Halbert of Moneta, Virginia; his nieces and nephews; and devoted family friends, Norman and Patsy Crumpton of Sebring, Florida. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2010 in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg with the Reverend Paul Bonham officiating. The family will receive friends at the Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church following the graveside service.
