Richard William McGrath

Ric was born the only son of William Joseph and Vera Elizabeth Fordham McGrath in Jacksonville, NC.  Survivors include:  Sandy McGrath, high school sweetheart and wife of 53 years; Daughters, Shelley Lundie (Frank) and Holly Roddenberry (Jay);  Six grandchildren – Mac, Eli, Lana Lundie and Lily Drewry (Raymond);  Reed and Miles Roddenberry;  sisters-in-law, Laura Perez and Laura Gagne. Ric’s passion for music led him to a 30-year career as a radio broadcaster (disc jockey) and studio producer.  From WISP in Kinston, NC to WRVA in Richmond, VA – he was known as both morning and afternoon drivetime personality, Ric Sands.  After retiring from radio, he drove for Martz Tour Bus and Petersburg City Transit.  His favorite final job was his little lawn care business known as “Popalong Grassity”!  Since the age of 15, Ric played guitar in various bands, from high school sock hops to competition winning groups.  His favorites were The Thompson Sands Band and the Colonial Heights Baptist Orchestra.  For about 20 years, Ric sang gospel music as “NewHeart”, a duet with his favorite alto, Sandy. Giving 110% of himself to everything he did, Ric excelled and enjoyed many hobbies:  fishing, ham radio, flying his drone, camping, etc.  But singing for Jesus was what he loved most.  A dream trip to Nashville to record a gospel CD was a life highlight – as was leading his Life Group singing old hymns every Sunday morning. Faith in Jesus, family love, and friends who made music with him.  This was his simple and happy life.  A Celebration of Life service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, August 26, 2023 at the Heights Baptist Church 17201 Route 1 S. Chesterfield, VA 23834. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 3:00-4:00 p.m. at the church on Saturday.  Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
