Robert "Bobby" D. Olinger

November 12, 1936 — December 11, 2024

Disputanta

CSM Robert “Bobby” D. Olinger, USA (Ret.), 88, of Disputanta, VA, went to be with his Lord and Savior and joined his beloved wife in Heaven on Wednesday, December 11, 2024. Born in Rich Valley, VA on November 12, 1936, he was the son of the late John Henry Olinger and Carrie Furguson Olinger. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 1/2 years, Barbara Ellen Olinger; his brothers, Charles, John, and Don Olinger; sisters, Betty Jernigan, Dorothy Clear, Mary Emma Carter, and Ruby Jean Olinger; mother and father-in-law, Dewey and Nannie Repass; and his sisters-in-law, Elverta Puckett, Genevieve Harris, and Bertha Hutton.

After graduating from high school, Bobby joined the United States Army, dedicating 30 years to honorable service. His military career took him to Europe and numerous locations across the United States. He bravely served in the Vietnam War and in Korea, earning numerous medals and decorations, including the Vietnam Service Medal and the Bronze Star Medal, among many others. Bobby retired as a Command Sergeant Major, the culmination of a remarkable career. Following his military service, he continued to serve his community by working for the Chesterfield Sheriff’s Department, retiring after 10 years.

In his retirement, Bobby found joy in caring for God’s creatures, spending his days feeding birds, squirrels, and many other animals at his home. In his later years, Bobby devoted his life to Christ. Though quiet about his faith, he was a humble servant of the Lord, finding peace in reading his Bible daily and praying every morning and night. Above all, Bobby cherished his family, especially his grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Poppaw.” He was their greatest entertainer, always joking around, making dancing videos, riding bikes, and simply enjoying every moment with them. Bobby also had a passion for college football, enthusiastically supporting the schools his grandchildren attended. His pride and love for his family were immeasurable, and he leaves behind a legacy of laughter and love.

He is survived by his beloved daughters, Patti Olinger and Donna Jaeger; son-in-law, Bill Jaeger; grandchildren, Zachary Davis, Alex Jaeger, and Michael Jaeger; sisters, Polly Sue Woodward, Shirley Olinger, Brenda Hancock, and Carol Davis; sister-in-law, Peggy Repass; brothers-in-law, Charles W. Repass and Russell Repass; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

A mausoleum service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 19, 2024, in Southlawn Memorial Park, 1911 Birdsong Road, S. Prince George, VA 23805. Arrangements are by the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes.
