Robert Steve "Bobby" Simmons Sr., 86, of Matoaca died at his home on Monday, February 23, 2015. Born October 16, 1928, he was the son of the late Harold Eugene Simmons and Mary Elizabeth Timmons Simmons. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold Simmons, Vernard (Happy) Simmons, Claiborne (Shavey) Simmons, and Warren Simmons; and a sister, Mildred Simmons. Bobby was the Owner/Operator of Matoaca Supermarket/Exxon. He was a lifelong resident of Matoaca, a member of Matoaca United Methodist Church, a Charter Member of the Matoaca Sportsmen Club, and served his country in the Virginia National Guard. Bobby was well respected in the community and was unofficially known as the "Mayor of Matoaca." His love for life centered around his family, friends, and living and boating on Lake Chesdin. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen Thomason Simmons; a son, Robert Steve Simmons Jr. and fiancée, Becky Nichols of Halifax County; Lisa Simmons Howerton and husband, Bart of Chester; three grandchildren, Ashley Simmons Klimek and husband, Mark of Chester, Brian Scott Howerton and wife, Bonnie of Colonial Heights, and Michael Evan Howerton of Chesterfield; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory 2033 Boulevard with the Reverend Richard Gordon officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions are made to Crater Community Hospice, 3916 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, Virginia 23805 or Matoaca United Methodist Church.
