Roger Green

May 12, 1951 — October 23, 2015

Roger Malcolm Green, 64, of Colonial Heights was called Home after a courageous battle with cancer on October 23, 2015 with his family by his side. Born in Scott County, Indiana, he was the son of the late Henry Malcolm and Betty Williams Green. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved bride of 31 years, Robyn Schaeffer Green, and their two children Zachary Thomas Green of Virginia Beach, VA, and Kathryn McCullough Green of West Hartford, CT. He is also survived by his brother Russell Henry Green of Milltown, IN, sister Sherry Green Baker of Pekin, IN, and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and cousins. Roger was the Executive Director of the Colonial Heights Chamber of Commerce, also serving as Vice President of Membership for the Virginia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. He was especially proud of the Annual Turkey Trot sponsored by the Chamber, and the Chamber's role in founding the "Colonial Heights Has Talent" show which benefitted the Colonial Heights Food Pantry. Prior to his job at the Chamber, he was an educator for 35 years. Throughout his career, he was the principal of Colonial Heights Middle School, Dublin Middle School, and Pulaski Middle School, and assistant principal of Princess Anne High School and Newtown Road Elementary School in Virginia Beach. For the last three years, he also worked part time as an adjunct professor at John Tyler Community College for the Career Switchers program. Roger received his Bachelors degree from Eastern Kentucky University, Masters Degree and Certificate of Advanced Study from Old Dominion University, and Education Specialist degree from Virginia Tech. Roger was a committed member of the United Methodist Church, serving as lay leader and in various other leadership roles at Thalia in Virginia Beach, Mountain View in Dublin, and Wesley in Colonial Heights. At Wesley, he led a dedicated group of early risers for a 6 am bible study every Wednesday morning for 14 years. He was a certified lay speaker and he always felt blessed when he had the opportunity to share the Word. The past three years, he ministered to the congregation of Blackstone Christian Church. In 1989, Roger was a pilgrim on the Tidewater Three Walk to Emmaus. Roger had a servant's heart. Throughout his life he served on many boards and civic organizations. Since living in Colonial Heights, he served on numerous boards: Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Old Brickhouse Foundation, and the Colonial Heights Food Pantry. He was an active participant in the Tri-Cities Workcamp, and a founding member of The ARC - South of the James chapter. Of course, he had many fond memories of all his buddies in the Colonial Heights Kiwanis, a very special group of men and women. The family would like to extend our sincerest gratitude for the outpouring of love, support, and prayers they have received throughout his illness. Roger walked the walk. He blessed the lives of those he met and we will forever cherish his memory. As a family, we praise God for his precious life - a life well lived to the Glory and Honor of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at the Colonial Heights Middle School, 500 Conduit Rd., Colonial Heights, VA 23834. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 26, 2015 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3701 Conduit Rd., Colonial Heights, VA 23834. The family is being served by E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, or to Tri-Cities Workcamp, P.O.
