Roy E. Staples, 92, died peacefully Friday, November 30, after several years of declining health. Mr. Staples was born February 19, 1920 in South Hill. He is the son of the late Lottie Moore Staples and James Robert Staples. Roy was one of nine children. He was preceded in death by his brothers, James, William (Bill), Clarence (Jeff), Howard, and Jack Staples; sisters, Lois Dowdy, Louise Wade, and Virginia Cave. Roy retired from Brown & Williamson as a maintenance supervisor in 1983 after forty three and a half years of service. He has been a member of Matoaca Baptist Church for over 71 years. Roy is survived by his wife of over 71 years, Virginia Joyner Staples; daughter, Nancy Newsom and husband Thomas of Raleigh, NC; brother-in-law, Henry (Penny) Joyner; sisters-in-law, Mildred (Mickey) Staples and Mae Staples as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews. A funeral service will be held Tuesday 11:00 a.m. in the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Interment will follow in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Crater Community Hospice. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Alzheimer's Care Unit of the Dunlop House in Colonial Heights for their care and concern for Roy and the family.
