Shirley Frances Auen Eastman of Dinwiddie County passed away at Johnston-Willis Hospital on Monday, August 17, 2009 at 5:50 a.m. in the arms of her loving daughter, Tamara. Mrs. Eastman was born on October 6, 1938 in Hopewell, Virginia and was the daughter of James and Ruth Auen. She graduated from Hopewell High School in 1957 and attended Business College, afterward. She was employed by Petersburg Savings Bank for several years, now known as Bank of America. Mrs. Eastman was married on October 10, 1959 to MSgt. (USA) William C. Eastman. As an Army wife, Mrs. Eastman traveled extensively, lived on bases in France and Germany, and supported her husband as he served a tour in Vietnam, all the while being a devoted wife and mother to four children, back home. Mrs. Eastman was predeceased by her parents, James and Ruth Auen, as well as her husband, William Eastman, and a son, Eric C. Eastman. She is survived by her children, Tamara J. Eastman of Dinwiddie, Virginia, William D. Eastman of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Michael P. Eastman of Herndon, Virginia. Mrs. Eastman is also survived by two daughters-in-law, Pamela and Yuliya Eastman and three grandchildren, Addison R. Eastman of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Alexander W. Eastman, and Maxim N. Eastman of Herndon, Virginia. She is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, James and Andrea Auen of Portsmouth, Virginia; and two sisters, Deborah Slootmaker and Nancy Olaf both of Cottageville, South Carolina; her very devoted cousins, Helen and Sonny Brown of Hopewell, Virginia and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by several very devoted friends, especially Dorothy Love of Henrico, North Carolina and Della Olgers of Sutherland, Virginia who have been close to her most of her life. A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 21, 2009 in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, Virginia, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband and son. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, The American Diabetes Association, The American Heart Association, or St. Jude's Research Hospital. Very special thanks go out to the Southside Regional Dialysis Unit for their loving care over the past few years, as well as the paramedics from Medical Transportation. Units of Johnston-Willis Hospital in Midlothian, Virginia for the wonderful care provided to Mrs. Eastman and her family in Mrs. Eastman's last hours.
