Stephen D. Broas, 50, of Chesterfield, Virginia, died on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 in his home with his wife, Wynne Broas, by his side. Steve was born on June 2, 1964 in Morristown, New Jersey. He was the eighth of nine children born to the late William and Anita Broas of Florham Park, New Jersey. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Delaware Road in Convent Station, where Steve grew up. Steve followed his four older brothers to Delbarton School in Morristown, NJ, where he excelled in baseball and football and graduated in 1982. He attended Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where he lettered as a varsity baseball player, graduating in 1986. He received a Master's Degree from the College of William & Mary in 1994. After college, Steve moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, where he met the love of his life, Wynne Elliott. They were married on June 4, 1994. Steve was a teacher at Clara Byrd Baker School in Williamsburg, Virginia for 8 years. He was later employed by Novartis Pharmaceuticals as a medical sales manager. Steve and Wynne moved to Chesterfield, Virginia in 2004. In October of 2012, Steve was diagnosed with ALS. He bravely faced the incurable disease until his death. He achieved national recognition by challenging New York Giants quarterback, Eli Manning, to do the "ice bucket" challenge in the summer of 2014. Manning responded and took Steve's challenge. The "ice bucket challenge" raised millions of dollars for ALS research. Steve is survived by his wife, Wynne, and his three daughters, Abby, Kate, and Kelsey. On Wynne's side of the family, Steve is survived by Julie Wilmarth (Brad), Lee Elliott (Angie), Emily Chiodo (Christopher) and his mother-in-law, Jane T. Elliott. He is further survived by eight siblings on his side of the family; Dr. William Broas, Pauline Emmett (Robert), Timothy M. Broas, the U. S. Ambassador to the Netherlands (Julie), Mary Christine Daly (John), Matthew Broas (Liz), Susan Barry (Ted), Peter Broas (Lori), and Melissa Hunt. There are 33 nieces and nephews. His two dogs, Bailey and Charlie, will miss him as well. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 17111 Jefferson Davis Hwy, South Chesterfield, VA 23834, with Fr. Lou Ruoff, Celebrant. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the church. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Association, 2800 N.
