He was also preceded in death by his wife of 67 years Joan Bennett Armentrout, brothers Leon, Leo, Donald and Richard Armentrout and grandson Christopher Brewer. He and Joan moved to Colonial Heights VA in 1953 with everything that they owned in an old Chevrolet. He completed a printer apprentice program in 1956 with Plummer Printing Co. where he worked before transferring to Phillip Morris in 1975 where he retired in 1993. He was assistant little league football coach at Harrowgate Elementary School from 1965 to 1967. He was a founding member of Ettrick Matoaca Rescue Squad and volunteered with them for many years. He had a lifelong love and knowledge of steam trains and especially enjoyed spending time on his family’s property in Gandy, WV. Sonny’s ability to recall and verbally communicate family history and events made him an excellent storyteller and historian.
