Steven Owen Sheffield

Steven O. “Gunk Gunk” Sheffield, 77, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at St. Francis Medical Center in Midlothian. Born on June 28, 1947, he was the son of the late Alvin and Lola.

Steve was a dedicated Airman who proudly served his country during the Vietnam War, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-5) in the United States Air Force. After 30 years of service, he retired as the Police Chief of Colonial Heights, where he served with distinction for the last 8 years of his career.

A committed community member, Steve was an active participant in the American Legion Post 2 in Petersburg. He cherished time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, often enjoying scenic car rides to the local fruit stand or taking his wife on relaxing trips to the beach. Steve had a special way of spoiling his beloved wife and had a penchant for receiving daily Amazon packages, much to his delight.

Steve is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Pam; his four daughters, Angie (Eric), Jane (Keith), Stephanie (Bill), and Shannon (Terry); as well as his grandchildren, Erica, Peyton, Easton, and Brylee. He will also be remembered by his great-grandchildren, Wessyn, and Jaxsyn, who is expected to arrive in February 2025.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 25, 2024, in the Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia, 10300 Pridesville Road, Amelia Court House, Virginia 23002. The family will receive friends Sunday, November 24, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
