Stewart Commodore Autrey, affectionately known as "PaPaw", 92, of Colonial Heights passed away on Monday, October 14, 2024. Born on February 29, 1932, he was the son of the late Doc and Nellie Autrey, and was also preceded in death by his brothers, Doc "Junior" Autrey and Jeter Autrey. A man of faith, Stewart attended Matoaca Gospel Hall, where he nurtured a lifelong connection with his spiritual community.
Stewart proudly served his country with distinction, retiring as a Sergeant First Class in the United States Army after 22 years of dedicated service. His military career spanned several key moments in history, including two tours in Korea—one during the Korean War and another post-war—and two tours in Vietnam. Stewart was stationed at various bases across the United States and abroad, exemplifying his unwavering commitment to his fellow soldiers and the defense of his nation.
Following his military service, Stewart continued serving his community and country through civil service at Fort Lee, where he worked for an additional 24 years.
Outside of his career, Stewart found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved fishing on quiet mornings, tending to his garden, and staying active through exercise. However, his greatest happiness came from time spent with his beloved wife and children, creating memories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Stewart’s legacy of love, service, and dedication will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his journey.
He is survived by his wife Doris O. Autrey; children, Deborah A. Brown, Michael S. Autrey (Cherie), Karen A. Adkins (Jim), Denise A Jessup (Ronnie); nine grandchildren, Christopher A.
