Sylvia Jean Newcomb Clarke, 83, of Chesterfield, Virginia went to be with the Lord on January 30, 2025. She was born on February 9, 1941, to the late Andrew Washington Newcomb and Mattie Mae Williams Newcomb in Rehoboth, Virginia and was one of 12 children. Sylvia Jean (AKA Grandma Jean) was a lifelong collector, a frequent passenger on road trips, a giver of many gifts, an excellent Southern cook and enjoyed any time she could celebrate with her family, whether winning at birthday bingo, sharing desserts or more recently, listening to her great-granddaughter play the piano. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Ernest Clarke, Sr., her son, Ernest Clarke Jr; brothers, Joe, Jack, Hester, Warren and Billy Newcomb; sisters, Ethel Mae Dayberry, and Lois Clark, and two infant siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Wanda C. Green and her husband, Mike; her son, Michael G. Clarke and his wife, Mary Ann, her granddaughter Amy N. Harger and her husband, Ryan; her grandson, Aaron M. Green; her five great-grandchildren, Azalea, Lincoln, Peter, Gabriel, and Ezekiel; one sister, Martha Clark; one brother, Bennie Newcomb; numerous nieces and nephews; and her dear friend, Pat Drumright. Additionally, the family would like to extend their appreciation and thanks to the staff of Commonwealth Senior Living - Chesterfield, for the great care, patience, and kindness shown to our mother in her final years. A graveside service will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 7, 2025, at Sunset Memorial Park 2901 W. Hundred Road Chester, Virginia 23831 with the Reverend Dr. David Hayes officiating. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834.
