Van Edward Russell, 67, of N. Dinwiddie passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at his home. Born February 8, 1955, he was the son of the late Martha Satterfield and John T. Russell, Sr., and was also preceded in death by his brother, Jeffrey Neal Russell; niece, Laura Gayle Hensley; and nephew, Kyle Russell.
He was a lifetime member of Smith Grove United Methodist Church. Van was a self-employed mechanic, with a lifetime’s worth of experience. He was very talented with his hands and could repurpose just about anything that was put in front of him, and he always had a better way to do things. When he was well, Van enjoyed fishing and going to the Virginia Motorsports Park, where he enjoyed being around and helping where he could.
He is survived by his sister, Linda Hensley (Curtis); brother, Johnny Russell (Dagmar); nieces, Amy Smith (Chris); nephews, Craig Hensley (April), Sean Russell (Josie), Adam Russell (Jennifer), Mark Russell; ten great-nieces and nephews, Alexis, Grant, Clint, Kaylee, Laci, Evan, Ellie, Izzie, Anna, Emma; other extended family members and many beloved friends.
Interment will be private. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 12:00p.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church, 22218 Dabney Mill Road N. Dinwiddie, Virginia 23803. The family will receive friends for a memorial visitation one hour prior to the memorial service. A reception will follow the memorial service at the church, and the family invites everyone to bring a covered dish if able. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Online condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
