Vernell Cates

Vernell Moody Cates, 92, of Matoaca died Monday, May 9, 2016 at the Petersburg Home for Ladies. She was a native of Warwick County, Virginia and the daughter of the late Nora Loucks Moody and Ashland Moody. Mrs. Cates was a longtime member of Matoaca Baptist Church where she served on the Pastor Search Committee when the late R. Roland Powell was called to the pastorate, taught in the Primary Department, worked in the kitchen, sang in the choir, and served in many other capacities. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Clarence L. Cates, Sr. She is survived by her children C.L. Cates, Jr. (Brenda) and Connie C. Kirkland (Wayne Webb, Sr.), her grandchildren Donald W. Kirkland, III (Kelly) and Martin L. Cates (Meredith), and her great-grandchildren Nathan, Madeline, Anna, and Hatley-Grace. A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 13, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in Matoaca Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald Joyner officiating. Internment Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening, May 12, 2016 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to the Matoaca Baptist Church Organ Fund, 6409 River Road, Matoaca, VA 23803 or to Crater Community Hospice, 3916 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, VA 23805.
