Virginia Ann Thompson, 91, of Hampton, VA, formerly of Colonial Heights, VA, passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Ann was born to the late James August Thompson and Annie James Callis Thompson on November 18, 1932, in Lunenburg County, VA. She graduated from Petersburg High School in 1950, and started her civil service career at Fort Lee, then Fort Monroe where she retired. She received numerous awards for her work during her employment. Most notably was the Federal Records and Information Management Award for Excellence in 1981. In the history of the award, she was the first woman ever to win for the Army.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Ruth Wells, Olive Barnes, Robert M. Thompson, Laura Love, and Eunice Brockwell. Affectionately known as “Aeon”, she is survived by her nieces and nephew, Carole T. Gibson, Anne B. Shell (Bruce), James D. Love (Fara), and Laura L. James (Bill). She is also survived by a host of great-nieces and nephews, as well as great-great-nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.
Ann loved to spend time with her family and friends. Every morning, she would have her cup of coffee and work the daily crossword puzzle to get her day started. She definitely made her own decisions and lived life on her own terms.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at Central United Methodist Church, 227 Chapel Street, Hampton, VA 23669. The family will receive friends after the service. Arrangements are by the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Williams Cemetery Association – Mary Hinkle, 1587 Hinkle Road, Kenbridge, VA 23944.
