Virginia Staples

July 30, 1922 — February 17, 2015

Virginia Joyner Staples, 92, died peacefully Tuesday, February 17, 2015 after several months of declining health. Although, for the last two years she'd been a resident of the Crossings at Ironbridge in Chester, she lived her entire life in Matoaca. She was one of six children of Hattie Daughtry Joyner and Patrick Henry Joyner. She was married for over 71 years to Roy E. Staples who preceded her in death in November of 2012. Also preceding her in death are her brothers, Wade and Hunter of Matoaca, Harry of Greensboro, N.C. and one sister, Margaret Barricks of Prince George. Virginia worked for over 15 years at Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corp. in Petersburg until 1953 when she became a full-time homemaker. She was a life-long member of Matoaca Baptist Church, and along with Roy, served in many areas of the church. One of the roles closest to her heart, and the last, was that of Sunday School Teacher of the Naomi Ladies Bible Class. For many years Virginia was an avid vegetable gardener which also gave her the pleasure of canning and sharing with others. Other pursuits that gave her great enjoyment were crocheting, especially afghans, baking pies and in particular, cutting the grass at their home on her John Deere lawn tractor, which she did into her 80's. Virginia is survived by a daughter Nancy Newsom and her husband, Tom who reside in Raleigh, N.C.; as well as a brother Henry A. "Penny" Joyner and his wife, Jean, of Matoaca; in addition to several nieces and nephews. Her family would like to thank all the staff at The Crossings at Ironbridge for their personal and exceptional care. Funeral services for Virginia will be held at Matoaca Baptist Church, 6409 River Road, 23803 on Monday February 23, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Donald Joyner officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 22, 2015 2 - 3:30. p.m.in the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, 23834.
