Virginia Sarah Samford Thompson, 89, of Matoaca passed away on Tuesday, June 21, at her residence. She was the widow of Robert M. (Doc) Thompson. She was born April 23, 1922, to the late Apelles Berkley and Hattie Eolin Elmore Samford of Alberta, Virginia. Mrs. Thompson was also preceded in death by a son, Robert Y. (Bobby) Thompson of Matoaca; brothers, B.C. (Bill) Samford of Alberta; Marshall, Stuart and Gene Samford of Richmond, and Joseph Samford of Chester; sisters, Alice Daniel of Alberta, Mae Chambliss of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. and Eolin Lafoon of Blackstone. She is survived by a daughter, Carole Gibson and husband, Joseph of Matoaca; grandson, Robert D. (Bobby) Gibson of Matoaca; granddaughters, Michele Harris and husband, Brett and Kristen Perkinson and husband, Scott all of Sutherland; great-granddaughter, Sarah Virginia Harris of Sutherland; sisters-in-law, Olive Barnes of Dinwiddie, Eunice Brockwell and husband, John of Colonial Heights, and Ann Thompson of Hampton; many cousins, nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 24, 2011 in East Matoaca Cemetery, with the Reverend Larry House, of Ocran United Methodist Church, officiating. The family will receive friends at Mrs. Thompson's home in Matoaca.
