Waltraut Strauch Dunn
On Sunday evening February 10, 2019, our vibrant, creative, and deliciously funny "Trudy"/ "Traudel" decided to go Home, so she did.
Born in East Prussia in 1925, Waltraut enjoyed an idyllic childhood in the beauty of her native land before the forces of war pushed her three times from her home. Her father Eduard was taken away by Russian soldiers, her four brothers all conscripted into the German forces, and her mother Marie separated from her by Allied bombs. Tough "Traudel", just a teen, made it to the relative safety of Bamberg in Bavaria. In the years after the war, Marie was found; two elder brothers, Waldemar and Heinz mourned; and two surviving brothers, Werner and Guenther Strauch, who live in Germany, mourn with us today.
She met her love David Dunn there, and they married in 1950, when she moved from the verdant hills of Bavaria to the desert of Fort Bliss, Texas. Daughters Melissa Dunn (George Henderson) and Crystal Cales (Kenneth) completed the little Army family. It was while they lived just outside of Paris for five years that her passion for painting awakened, leading her to produce scores of fabulous works of art after Dave passed in 1992. Her paintings grace the homes of discerning collectors around the world.
Having never met a stranger, hundreds of lucky friends and acquaintances are left to mourn her along with her two girls: stepson Steven Dunn (Jackie); grandchildren Brian Cole (Jessica) and their children Eden and Ezra; Lauren Cole Costantini (Lance) and Baby Girl arriving in March 2019; and Kelsey Robertson (Maxwell). She "adopted" many others, most notably third "daughter", Gwen Franco (Joseph Hennessy).
We trust she is ballroom dancing, her second passion, with Dave, holding court with her many admirers above, and thoroughly enjoying her heavenly body. And, as always, when told to "Behave yourself", her answer is "No, I want to have fun!"
Those who wish to honor her life can heed her motto, "Live well, laugh often, and love much." A celebration of life will be held at the Lutheran Church of our Redeemer in Petersburg on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, and/or the Safe Haven Animal Discovery Experience, her favorite animal charity, in Bolivia, NC.
