William "Bill" Michael Birkett

William "Bill" Michael Birkett, 63, a dedicated retired Colonel from the United States Army, rode into the sunset on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of valor, service, and a spirit as free as the open road. Born in Wisconsin on September 12, 1960, he was the son of the late Robert and Chloe Birkett.

With a distinguished career spanning 28 years in the United States Army, Bill stood tall among his comrades, serving with honor and distinction during some of the nation's most challenging times. His courage shone brightly during the turbulent sands of Desert Storm and the complex landscape of the Bosnian War. For his exceptional bravery and selfless dedication, Bill was honored with the prestigious Silver Star and Meritorious Service Medal, testament to his unwavering resolve and leadership on the battlefield.

Beyond the call of duty, Bill found peace in the wind rushing past him on his Harley motorcycle. A true enthusiast of the open road, he reveled in the freedom of traveling across the country, each mile a testament to his love for adventure, exploration, and liberation. As a proud member of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, Bill found camaraderie and brotherhood among fellow riders, sharing stories of service and the thrill of the ride.

Bill's commitment to community extended far beyond his military service. As a member of American Legion Post 146 and Harley Owners Group 1381, he fostered bonds of friendship and unity, embodying the spirit of service and loyalty. His leadership was further evident in his two terms as President of H.O.G. 1381, where he guided fellow riders with wisdom and compassion.

In addition to his military and motorcycle pursuits, Bill dedicated himself to shaping future generations as a former Troop Leader for Boy Scouts 103 in Williamsburg, VA. Through his mentorship and guidance, he instilled the values of courage, integrity, and service in countless young minds, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.

As the sun sets on Bill's earthly journey, his memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Diana Birkett; four children, Robert Birkett and wife, Sarah Hesse, Jacob Birkett and wife, Katherine Kolakowski, Amanda Birkett and husband, Josh Turner, Stephanie Birkett and husband, Aaron Cheely; two grandchildren, Finn Birkett and Eloise Birkett; three siblings, Jim Birkett, Tracy Birkett and wife, Angie, Terry Birkett and wife, Allison; other extended family members and many cherished friends.

A celebration of life service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association College Scholarship.
