MSGT William Russell Richards, U.S. Army Retired, passed away at Southside Regional Medical Center on August 5, 2016. He was born July 8, 1928 to the late Lewis Christopher Richards and Anna Pauline Hypes Greenway. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Eugene Greenway; his sister, Ruth Bower; and a son in-law, Andrew Stuart Kerrick. Mr. Richards retired from the Army after serving in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, during which he received a Bronze Star medal. After his Army Career he retired from Synoptics Systems Inc., Petersburg and enjoyed his time with his family. Mr. Richards enjoyed many things in life, like his favorite sport teams, the Washington Nationals for baseball and the Washington Redskins for Football. He liked to pass his free time as an avid coin and stamp collector. He also loved to be a part of many different civic organizations like, The American Legion Post 2, The VFW Post 637, and the Hopewell Moose Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Iris "Jean" Richards; four daughters, Deborah Kerrick, Carol Richards, Cindy Mizelle and husband, Mark, and Sheri Booth and husband, David; numerous loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold Richards and James Greenway; a sister, Linda Burroughs and brother in-law, Linwood Bower; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at First Christian Church at 301 E South Blvd, Petersburg, VA 23805. Family will receive friends after the service.
