William John Smith, 61, of Dewitt, died on December 3, 2008 at Southside Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late Lonnie W. and Margaret Merten Smith. He was a member of Dinwiddie Baptist Church and worked for Crowder Construction Company as a truck driver. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict. Mr. Smith is survived his wife, Mary Sue Clay Smith; two daughters, Lori Smith, of Petersburg, and Tina Smith of Hopewell; one brother, Lonnie G. Smith of Prince George; one sister, Janie Franklin of Georgia; one step-sister and step-brother; and two granddaughters, Ashley and Nikki. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Dinwiddie Baptist Church with the Reverend John Burnette officiating. Interment will follow in Prospect Christian Church Cemetery, Dewitt. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
