William Smith Sr.

William Clay Smith, Sr. "Buck", 85 of Church Road, VA died on January 16, 2016 at Southside Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Born in Petersburg, Virginia on October 27, 1930, he was the son of the late Harry and Emma Smith. Buck graduated from Petersburg High School and continued his studies at VCU, receiving a BS Degree in Business, and later received a MBA from the University of Richmond. Mr. Smith was a United States Army Veteran serving his country during the Korean War. He retired in 1987 as a Department Head for the Army Logistics Management College. He traveled extensively to numerous Department of Defense facilities worldwide. Following retirement, he continued working in various part time positions, as a Training Systems Analyst; management instructor; church secretary; and a training programs consultant and developer for a government agency. He was an avid sports enthusiast, having lettered in football, basketball and baseball at Petersburg High School, and in basketball and baseball at VCU. He also enjoyed golfing and tennis in his earlier years. He was a volunteer basketball coach for eight years at St. Joseph's Central High School in Petersburg. As the years passed he continued his interest in various sports. He possessed a quick wit and really enjoyed humorous people, situations and entertainers. Mr. Smith is survived by his beautiful high school sweetheart, Patsy Smith to whom he was married to for 61 years; one son, William "Bill" Clay Smith, Jr. and wife, Susan; a daughter, Cynthia Smith Walk and husband, Paul; a brother, James Aubrey Smith and wife, Joan; four grandchildren; Emily Francis (Trey), Adam Smith (Chelsea), Whitney Walk (Chris Stanley) and Paul Walk, III; two great-grandchildren, Emma Louise Stanley and Carter Raymond Francis; and a brother-in-law, James L. Kirkland. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, VA 23834 with the Rev. Thomas Collins, officiating. Interment will be private. Flowers are welcome, or contributions may be made to the Dinwiddie Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 70, Dinwiddie, VA 23841, or to the charity of your choice.
